Advanced Cardiac Life Support Refresher
Designed for all levels of emergency medical technicians, nurses, physicians, and physicians' assistants to assure maintenance of didactic and psychomotor skill training in techniques of Advanced Cardiac Life Support according to the 1992 Standards and Guidelines of the American Heart Association. Includes endotracheal intubation, EKG dysrhythmia recognition, synchronized, unsynchronized and semi-automatic defibrillation, cardiovascular pharmacology, and electronic pacemaker. Prerequisites: Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider validation, current validation in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, EMT240, or permission of instructor.

1. Describe the concepts of the Chain-of-Survival according to American Heart Association Standards and Guidelines. (I)
2. List and describe the causes of sudden cardiac death. (I)
3. Perform all the skills in basic life support to include one - and two-person CPR for adult, child, and infant; conscious and unconscious obstructed airway maneuvers for adult, child, and infant; CPR for infant victims. (I)
4. Successfully insert oral and nasal airway. (I- II)
5. Correctly apply the face mask, nasal cannula, non-rebreathing mask, and bar-valve mask devices, nothing the percentage of oxygen delivered for each adjunct; (I -II)
6. Correctly perform endotracheal intubation. (I - II)
7. Correctly perform nasal and tracheal suction techniques. (I -II)
8. Correctly interpret the basic EKG dysrhythmias. (III)
9. Describe each of the steps in the universal algorithm for adult emerge cy cardiac care. (I- IV)
10. Describe each of the steps in the algorithm for early management of patients with chest pain, signs, and symptoms of myocardial infraction. (I -V)
11. Identify the indications, contraindications, actions, side effects, uses, and dosages of the following drugs: oxygen, morphine, nitroglycerin, atropine, isoproterenol, lidocaine, procainamide, bretylium, calcium chloride, furosemide, adenosine, verpamil, magnesium sulfate, proprontalol, dopamine, dobutmaine, and nitropusside. (I - VI)
12. Describe indications, techniques, and complications for peripheral andcentral vensus access. (VII)
13. Given a patient simulation for stable and ustable superventicular tachycardia, venticular tachycardia, venticular fibrillation, asystole, and pulseless electrical activity, identily the steps in the algorithm associated with each, according two the 1992 American Heart Association Guidlness. (I - VII)
14. Given a patient simulation for bradydyshhythmias, venticular fibrillation, pulseless venticular tachycardia, and asystole confirmed as venticular fibrillation, manage each member of the team, evalutation CPR, airway management, electrical, and pharmocologic interventions. (I - VIII)
15. Correctly perform transcutaneous pacing, defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, and semiautomatic defibrilliation. (I, VI, VIII - X)
16. Describe special resusitation situations to include stoke, traumatic cardiac arrest, shock, congestive heart failure, near-drowning, and hypothermia. (IX)
17. Describe the medical-legal aspects of advanced cardiac life support to include advanced directives, do-not-resucitate orders, discontinuation of life support messures, and concepts of skills validation. (X)
