Back Office Assisting Externship
Practicum in back office assigned within a medical setting on completion of all didactic and lab content within the Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) curriculum. Emphasis on application of all back office skills developed in the CMA Program. Prerequisites: HCE222, HCE251, HCE261, and permission of program coordinator.

1. Display interpersonal skills to obtain patient information and provide reassurance. (I)
2. Exhibit a professional commitment to medical ethics with particular regard to patient confidentiality. (II)
3. Use and maintain proper body substance isolation procedures. (III)
4. Escort and assist a patient to and from the examination room. (IV)
5. Obtain and record vital signs and physical parameters as required. (V)
6. Position and drape patient preparatory to examination specified by the medical practitioner. (VI)
7. Assist medical practitioner in performing routine back office procedures. (VII)
8. Apply proper techniques for parenteral injection under the supervision of a medical practitioner direction of the physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner during an examination, minor surgery, and diagnostic procedures in a medical setting. (VIII)
9. Assist in emergency medical response. (IX)
10. Obtain, prepare, and mount a standard electrocardiogram (EKG). (X)
11. Perform routine phlebotomies under the direction of the physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner during an examination, minor surgery, and diagnostic procedures in a medical setting. (XI)
12. Perform routine urinalysis using standardized materials and equipment. (XII)
