Language and Literacy for the Bilingual Child

Overview of language acquisition for young children in both home and school environments. Emphasis on adults' roles in fostering emerging languages and literacy skills in both the home language and English. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills included.

Language and Literacy for the Bilingual Child

 

1.

Describe past, present and projected language diversity in the local community and the nation.(I)

2.

Assess personal linguistic background, skills and attitudes about bilingualism. (I)

3.

Collect anecdotal evidence from local adults regarding the advantages and disadvantages of being bilingual in contemporary America. (I)

4.

Review research evidence regarding language acquisition and the consequences of bilingualism for young children and their families. (II)

5.

Identify current theories of language acquisition and explain the interrelationships in learning one's language, literacy and culture. (II)

6.

Identify current controversies regarding bilingual education in the United States. (II)

7.

Review and discuss how to determine and respond to beliefs, concerns and decision making responsibilities of family members regarding their young child's language and literacy learning. (II)

8.

Select, visit and observe 2 or more early childhood settings where bilingual children are served. (III)

9.

Design learning activities which promote competency in the child's home language appropriate to the child's developmental level. (III)

10.

Design learning activities which promote competency in Standard English appropriate to the child's developmental level. (III)

11.

Develop a plan for communicating with parents/family members whose language is not spoken by any staff members in an early childhood program. (III)
