Paramedic Refresher Course
Designed to meet requirements for EMT-Advanced under guidelines of the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT), National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) as recognized by the Arizona Department of Health Services (A-DHS) Office of Emergency Medical Services (O-EMS). Provides updated knowledge and skills related to hypoperfusion states, respiratory arrest or insufficiency, seizure states, cardiovascular emergencies, unconscious states of undetermined etiology, head injury with altered levels of consciousness, and chest trauma. Prerequisites: EMT272 or current EMT-Advanced certification in the state of Arizona and (current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider validation).

1. Describe the scope of the duties of the advanced emergency medical technician (NREMT-P). (I)
2. Identify the initial, focused, and continuing processes of assessment, medical history and vital signs, communications and documentations. (II)
3. Apply the procedures of identifying and treating hypoperfusion states including intravenous, intraosseous and central line (IV) fluid therapy and use of the Pneumatic Anti- Shock Garment (PASG) suit. (III)
4. Describe the actions, indications, contraindications, precautions, side effects, and dosages of the drugs included in the current Arizona Department of Health Services approved paramedic drug box. (IV)
5. Identify and treat emergencies related to each of the body systems. (V)
6. Identify and treat medical emergencies to include diabetic environmental, toxicological, abdominal, and genitourinary emergencies. (VI)
7. Identify and treat gynecologic and obstetrical emergencies. (VII)
8. Identify and treat neonatal and pediatric emergencies according to the American Heart Association Neonatal and Pediatric Advanced Life Support guidelines. (VIII)
9. Identify and treat gerontologic and behavioral emergencies according to the standing orders and protocols. (IX, X)
10. Identify and respond to behavioral emergencies, preserving personal safety and well being. (X)
11. Identify and treat respiratory and cardiac emergencies according to the American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support guidelines. (XI)
12. Identify signs and symptoms of patients with a communicable disease and list the appropriate body substance isolation procedures. (XII)
13. Demonstrate trauma victim assessment, airway management, control of hemorrhage and hypoperfusion states, cervical spine immobilization, splinting and PASG application according to local Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) protocols, the DOT EMT Advanced curriculum and the NREMT Guidelines. (XIII)
14. Triage and categorize patient care by priorities in a simulated disaster situation. (XIV)
15. Demonstrate 85 percent proficiency on a written examination and 95 percent accuracy of practical skills in selected EMS scenarios. (XV)
