Vascular Access for EMTs
Review of anatomy of circulatory system and skill development. Peripheral intravenous cannulation techniques, fluid resuscitation, obtaining venous blood samples for laboratory analysis, infection control techniques for the safety of self and victim, complications of intravenous cannulation. Content concurrent with American College of Surgeons Division on Trauma Standards of Care. Prerequisites: EMT-Basic or registered nurse with emergency and/or critical care experience.

3. Identify and differentiate isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic intravenous solutions. (III)
4. Select fluids; set up and manage equipment. (III, IV)
5. Identify and demonstrate aseptic and safety techniques. (V)
6. Identify and describe the indications and contraindications for intravenous and intraosseous site selection. (VI)
7. Perform all peripheral intravenous cannulation techniques. (VII)
8. Perform intraosseous techniques. (VIII)
9. Perform blood-drawing techniques. (IX)
10. Monitor infusion. (X)
11. Demonstrate 100 percent accuracy in intravenous techniques in selected scenarios. (XI)
