Intermediate Emergency Medical Technology
Designed to meet U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) Arizona Department of Health Services (A-DHS) Office of Emergency Medical Services (O-EMS) requirements for EMT- Intermediate. Provides advanced knowledge and skills related to hypoperfusion states, respiratory arrest or insufficiency, seizure states, cardiovascular emergencies, unconscious states of undetermined etiology, head injury with altered levels of consciousness, and chest trauma. Prerequisites: Current EMT-Basic certification in the state of Arizona and one calendar year's field experience as an EMT-Basic, EMT140, EMT/FSC238, and current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider validation. Satisfactory completion of comprehensive written, oral and practical evaluation on all prerequisite courses required prior to selection for this course. Prerequisites or corequisites: CRE101, or CRE111, or equivalent as indicated by assessment.

1. Describe the scope of the duties of the intermediate emergency medical technician (I-EMT). (I)
2. Identify the initial, focused, and continuing processes of assessment, medical history, and vital signs. (II)
3. Apply the procedures of identifying and treating hypoperfusion states including intravenous (IV) fluid therapy and use of the Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (PASG) suit. (III)
4. Describe the actions, indications, contraindications, precautions, side effects, and dosages of the drugs included in the current Arizona Department of Health Services approved (I-EMT) drug box. (IV)
5. Administer parenteral medications. (IV)
6. Identify and treat respiratory emergencies. (V)
7. Identify and treat cardiovascular emergencies. (VI)
8. Identify and treat central nervous system emergencies. (VII)
9. Identify and treat soft-tissue injuries. (VIII)
10. Identify and treat musculoskeletal emergencies. (IX)
