Refresher Course for Certified Emergency Medical Technicians
Designed to meet National and Arizona Department of Health Services (A-DHS) recertification for EMTs. Enhances the knowledge base of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and reinforces basic skills competencies. Prerequisites: Current basic EMT certification or permission of department.

1. Describe the scope of the duties of the basic emergency medical technician. (I)
2. Describe the medical/legal aspects of Basic Emergency Medical Technology. (I)
3. Identify the components of quality improvement in EMT-Basic patient care. (I)
4. Identify the initial, focused, and detailed patient assessments and vital sign findings that indicate emergency in any of the following categories: medical, environmental, traumatic, and surgical. (II)
5. Identify and care for a patient in need of basic life support. (III)
6. Demonstrate the use of the semi-automatic external defibrillator (SAED). (III)
7. Use mechanical aids to breathing and circulation. (IV)
8. Identify and treat a patient in shock. (V)
9. Identify and treat injuries to the head, chest, abdomen, and genitalia. (VI)
10. Demonstrate the procedures facilitating patient's prescribed medications. (VI, IX)
11. Identify and treat soft tissue injuries. (VII)
12. Stabilize and splint muscular skeletal injuries in the extremities. (VIII)
