Modern Jazz Dance I
Introduction to the theory and practice of modern jazz dance at the beginning level. Development of movement quality and performance skills. May be repeated for a total of two (2) semester credit hours. Prerequisites: None. Corequisites: DAN138 for dance majors.

1. Apply the theory of contraction and release at the beginning level. (I)
2. Demonstrate correct placement and alignment for dance at the beginning level. (I, II)
3. Apply basic modern jazz dance technique, theories, and styles at the beginning level. (I, II, III, IV)
4. Utilize the theory of the body's relationship to gravity and the center of gravity used in modern jazz dance at the beginning level. (I, II, III, IV, V)
5. Perform basic locomotor and axial movements in the center and across the floor at the beginning level. (II, III)
6. Practice the basic elements of dance: space, time, and energy with particular attention to rhythm and syncopation at the beginning level. (IV)
7. Practice basic rhythmic analysis and the impact of polyrhythms and syncopation on modern jazz dance at the beginning level. (IV)
8. Utilize technical skills, theories and style in improvisation and performance at the beginning level. (V)
