Pharmacological regulatory agencies, writing prescriptions, handling of various drugs, routes of administration classification of drugs, and their uses. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Assisting Program or permission of instructor.

1. Describe basic principles of pharmacology including sources of drugs, divisions of pharmacology, differences between the chemical, generic and brand name of drugs. (I- III)
2. State the functions of various regulator agencies and legislative acts that regulate drug use. (IV, V)
3. Describe the function of the Council on Dental Therapeutics. (IV)
4. Describe the function of each of the various publications that catalog drugs. (VI)
5. Describe the classical and practical parts of a prescription. (VII)
6. Identify the common Latin abbreviations used in prescription writing. (VIII)
7. Describe the proper handling of prescriptions and drugs including a basic "safe" policy for storage of medications. (IX)
8. Describe the routes of administration of drugs including advantages and disadvantages of each. (X)
9. Describe the effects of drugs. (XI)
10. Identify the function of both mild and strong analgesics, and describe their actions. (XII)
11. Identify the function of local anesthetics, types, and use of vasoconstrictors. (XII)

14. Identify classifications of antibiotic drugs: penicillins, erythromycins, tetracyclines, cephalosporins, and sulfonamides. (XIII)
