Examination of various pacific Rim countries with special emphasis on social customs, language and business practices. Concentration in six key trading companies: China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and Hong Kong. Prerequisites: None.

1. Describe the importance of the Pacific Rim within the scope of worldwide trade,including both trade agreements and trade issues between the various countries. (I)
2. Describe the specific strategies for growth of international trade being implemented by various countries within the Pacific Rim. (I)
3. Locate sources of data, information, and assistance to research the business environment of Pacific Rim countries. (I)
4. Define the various forms of business and channels of distribution available when conducting international trade in the Pacific Rim.(I)
5. Describe the business environment in Japan and Japan's rise to a position of world leadership. (II)
6. Locate sources of information and assistance about Japanese business practices, dominant industries, and the effect of Japanese culture on business practices. (II)
7. Locate sources of data about international trade with Japan, including trade with U.S.A. and trade within the Pacific Rim. (II)
8. Analyze the probable success of exporting a product to Japan, taking into consideration cultural factors, the Japanese market, and the Japanese distribution system. (II)
9. Locate data about the key products exported to China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and evaluate a product's potential in each market. (III)
10. Describe cultural and economic factors that affect how business is conducted in each country. (III)
11. Describe key factors in establishing and maintaining markets in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. (III)
12. Describe the business environment of Korea and Australia in terms of opportunities, types of business enterprises, and cultural factors unique to each market. (IV)
13. Describe common regional economic goals, including acceleration of economic growth, trade expansion, and industrial collaboration. (IV)
14. Describe common regional cultural values and practices as well as differences between the countries. (IV)
15. Compare and contrast the primary import and exports of the key trading nations in the Pacific Rim. (IV)
16. Analyze the potential for a particular product in a comparative marketing plan, indicating whether the product would have a single- country market, a market throughout the Pacific Rim, or a global market. (IV)
17. Identify the types of voice, data and video communications used in business in this region. (V)
18. Perform the steps necessary to connect to the Internet, and send and receive a message. (V)
19. Perform a list search to locate a group or individual involved in international business to communicate with via the Internet. (V)
20. Read the pathway notation included with each transmission in order to trace the route of your Internet message. (V)
