Impact of the Japanese culture on business practice. Guidelines are provided to help business people with some basic cultural differences between the United States and Japan. Prerequisites: None.

1. List industries in which Japan has become the dominant global leader and describe the key elements in Japan's deliberate strategy of economic recovery after World War II. (I)
2. Describe the Japanese corporate environment and analyze factors which have contributed to the success of that environment. (I)
3. List products that have been successfully exported to Japan. (II)
4. Describe marketing measures taken by successful exporters (marketing research, pricing, product adaptation, etc.). (II)
5. Locate sources of printed information and sources for help, including organizations and government agencies. (II)
6. Discuss several issues in the U.S.-Japan trade relationship. (II)
7. Describe factors which must be considered when exporting to Japan, including entry into the Japanese distribution system. (III)
8. Contrast Japanese and American negotiation tactics and business relationships. (III)
9. Describe options and requirements for investment in Japanese markets and for establishing a business in Japan. (III)
10. Identify the types of voice, data and video communications used in business in this region. (IV)
11. Perform the steps necessary to connect to the Internet, and send and receive a message. (IV)
12. Perform a list search to locate a group or individual involved in international business to communicate with via the Internet. (IV)
13. Read the pathway notation included with each transmission in order to trace the route of your Internet message. (IV)
