Trauma Patient Management for Rural EMS Providers
Designed to instruct rural prehospital-care personnel in the critical skills necessary to manage the trauma victim and the emergency medical scene through the Incident Command System (ICS). Enhances on-the-job training skills by focusing on emergency-care interventions in a specific community. Provides exposure to victim assessment, initial treatment, resuscitative techniques, victim stabilization, transportation of the victim to an emergency-care facility, and documentation.
Prerequisites: Basic EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification or nurse with emergency room experience.

1. Identify and apply emergency medical-scene management skills in the rural setting to include size-up, multi-victim situations, hazardous materials, and integration fo local emergency medical services (EMS) standard operating procedures and/or the Incident Command System (ICS) to selected victim scenarious. (I, IV, VI, VII, IX)
2. Demonstrate assessment and care management of the trauma victim to include primary survey, vital signs, secondary survey, stabilization, transportation, and documentation. (II, III, IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX)
3. Demonstrate airway management for the trauma victim through use of basic manipulative skills, adjuncts, and oxygen therapy. (III, IV, VI, IX)
4. Identify and demonstrate care management for the multi-system trauma victim to include head, spinal, chest, abdominal, pelvic, extremity, and soft tissue injuries. (IV, VI, IX)
5. Identify the classification and depth of burn injuries and demonstrate care management of the burn victim. (V, VI, IX)
6. Identify and demonstrate care management of the pediatric, pregnant, geriatric, diabetic, altered level of consciousness (ALOC), and crisis trauma victims. (VI, IX)
7. Identify and demonstrate vehicular extrication in order to provide access to and care management of the trauma victim. (VI, VII, IX)
8. Demonstrate trauma victim assessment, airway management, control of hemorrhage/hypovolemia, cervical spine immobilization, splinting, and PASG (pneumatic anti-shock garment) application according to local EMS protocols, the DOT (Department of Transportation) Basic EMT curriculum, and the ICS. (VI-IX)
9. Demonstrate ICS emergency-scene management, extrication, assessment, care management, transportation, and documentation of the trauma victim in selected EMS scenarios. (VI-IX)
10. Demonstrate 86 percent proficiency on a written examination and 95 percent accuracy of basic EMT practical skills in selected EMS scenarios. (IX)
