Preparation for commercial driver's license test, including driving safety, transporting cargo, the air brake system; driving combination vehicles, and transporting hazardous materials.

1. Identify the parts of the commercial driver's license tests which must be taken for various types of commercial vehicles, and indicate other Safety Act rules which apply for commercial drivers. (I)
2. List and describe the key locations to inspect before, during, and after a trip. (II)
3. Describe procedures used in a pre-trip vehicle inspection, and indicate the possible defects to look for. (II)
4. Describe methods for control of the vehicle under various standard situations. (II)
5. Describe correct shifting of gears using either a manual or automatic transmission. (II)
6. Describe correct use of mirrors, and effective techniques for signaling, communicating with other drivers, controlling speed, and managing space. (II)
7. Identify problems which may be encountered when driving at night, in winter, in very hot weather, or in the mountains, and describe techniques to be used under such conditions. (III)
8. Describe hazards that may be encountered in driving. (III)
9. Describe appropriate actions to take when various types of traffic of vehicle emergencies occur. (III)
10. Indicate causes of skids, and describe methods for correcting skids. (III)
11. Describe methods for action after an accident or when the vehicle is on fire. (III)
12. Describe methods for staying alert while driving, and explain the effects of drugs and alcohol on the driver. (III)
13. Explain how to identify hazardous cargo, and indicate the requirements for drivers of vehicles carrying such cargo. (III)
14. Explain weight and balance requirements for transporting cargo safely, and indicate when a cargo should be inspected. (VI)
15. Describe techniques for securing cargo properly. (IV)
16. Describe the components of an air brake system. (V)
17. List what should be inspected in an air brake system, and describe methods of inspection. (V)
18. Describe proper use of air brakes in emergency stops, on downgrades, and when air pressure is low. (V)
