Advanced Airway Management for EMTs
Designed to instruct emergency care personnel in the critical skills necessary to establish and maintain an airway of the traumatized or medically compromised patient. Airway skills include oxygen therapy with all adjuncts, administration of pharmaceuticals via the endotrachael (ET) /pharyngeal tracheal lumen airway (PTLA), management of the airway as a route for medications, and invasive airway procedures. Content concurrent with Department of Transportation Guidelines and the American College of Surgeons Division on Trauma Standards of Care. Prerequisites: Certified EMT, or registered nurse with emergency and/or critical care experience; each and all with Medical Control.

1. Identify and describe the pathophysiology of airway compromise. (I)
2. Identify and describe the airway anatomy in neonate, infant, pediatric, and adult victims. (II)
3. Identify and demonstrate the use of appropriate airway adjunct and oxygen therapy. (III)
4. Manage the neonatal, infant, pediatric, and adult patient victims with partial and complete airway obstruction. (IV-VI)
5. Identify and describe the pathophysiology of tension pneumothorax. (IV-VII)
6. Identify the need for advanced invasive airway management. (V-VII)
7. Perform naso and/or tracheal intubation, needle thoracostomy, and orotracheal and deep tracheal suctioning. (VI, VII)
8. Identify and explain the complications of advanced airway techniques. (VII)
9. Demonstrate 100% accuracy in airway management in selected scenarios. (VIII)
10. Demonstrate 85% proficiency on a written examination. (VIII)
