Pain Control
Study of dental anesthesia, analgesia, and nitrous oxide-oxygen conscious sedation. Clinical application of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide-oxygen. Prerequisites: DHE106, current CPR certification, or permission of instructor.

1. Describe pain, its causes and control. (I)
2. Safely assemble and prepare the armamentarium for local anesthesia. (V)
3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the anatomical considerations in the relationship between the structure of the skull and the trigeminal nerve. (II)
4. Describe local anesthetics, anesthetic solutions, their properties, complications, and contraindications. (III)
5. Identify common vasoconstrictors, their properties, considerations, and contraindications. (IV)
6. Describe the actions of local anesthetics, other than their ability to block conduction in nerve axons in the peripheral nervous system. (III)
7. Demonstrate proficiency in taking and interpreting the physical and psychological aspects of the medical history as it relates to the administration of local anesthetics, the choice of technique, and the agents used. (VI)
8. Identify local and systemic complications that may arise when using local anesthetics as well as the prevention and management of such complications. (VIII)
9. Describe the special needs of pain control techniques relevant to dental specialties. (IX)
10. Demonstrate safe and appropriate injections on all patient/clients in need of local anesthetics. (VII)
11. Demonstrate the ability to accurately determine the need for and the appropriate pain control method on all patients/clients. (I) (VII) (IX)
12. Prepare and maintain the dental equipment necessary for nitrous oxide oxygen sedation. (X)
13. Describe the properties, considerations, and contraindications of nitrous oxide in the human body. (XI)
14. Demonstrate the ability to safely administer nitrous oxide to patient/client. (XII)
