Composition, properties and criteria for use of dental materials. Principles of mixing techniques of restorative, preventive, and laboratory dental materials. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Assisting Program or Dental Hygiene Program or permission of instructor.

1. Identify several uses for dental materials in restorative, preventive, and adjunct areas. (I)
2. Identify physical and biological considerations of dental materials and relate them to the oral environment. (II)
3. Identify the types and causes of corrosion and tarnish of dental restorations, and the effects on the longevity of those restorations. (II)
4. Describe the classification, types, composition, manipulation, and uses of dental cements; identify cements used for temporary, intermediate, and permanent restorations, their uses, properties, and composition. (III)
5. Describe the uses and properties of varnishes and liners. (III)
6. Identify the physical properties and composition of dental amalgam alloys, describe the setting reactions, manipulation, and mixing techniques; and describe the properties of mercury as it relates to amalgam alloys regarding patient and operator safety. (IV)
7. Identify the types, categories, techniques of application, and manipulation of synthetic resins as restorative materials and sealants. (V)
8. Identify the various impression materials used in dentistry, citing composition, limitations, advantages, properties, the manipulation and use for each. (VI)
9. Identify various materials used for fabricating models from impressions; describe the differences in structure and properties; and identify which model materials are appropriate for specific impressions. (VII)
10. Identify the purpose, advantages, limitations, and techniques that are used in cleansing and polishing of teeth, restorations, and dental appliances. (VIII)
11. Identify the various waxes, their composition, properties, uses, limitations, and manipulation. (IX)
12. Describe the properties and uses of plastics and synthetic resins for use in construction of removable prosthetics and mouth protectors. (X)
13. Describe the properties and usage of gold and nonprecious alloys, and alloying ingredients; describe heat treating and methods of controlling physical characteristics of alloys used in dentistry. (XI)
14. Describe materials used for investment and casting; explain the investment and casting process; describe defects that could occur in the casting and explain how they could be avoided. (XII)
15. Identify the uses, composition, and physical properties of dental porcelain base metal alloys and miscellaneous esthetic dental materials. (XIII)
16. Describe infection control and universal precautions when working with dental materials and laboratory equipment. (XIV)
