Head and Neck Anatomy
Study of structure and function of the head and neck. Topics include the skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, and digestive systems. Emphasis on correlation to dental hygiene therapy, administration of local anesthesia, and routes of infection. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program or permission of instructor.

1. Utilize surface anatomy terminology. (I)
2. Locate and name the bones of the cranium and face with emphasis on facial and oral structures. (I)
3. Identify the locations and describe the functions of the muscles of mastication, accessory muscles of mastication, and facial expression. (II)
4. Identify where the 12 cranial nerves exit the skull and describe the function of each. (II)
5. Identify the locations of, areas innervated by, and interpret the functions of the trigeminal glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves. (II)
6. Describe the function of and areas of the head and neck innervated by the autonomic nervous system. (II)
7. Trace the route of the blood supply to the head and neck emphasizing the routes of arteries and veins that service the face and oral structures. (II)
8. Describe the lymphatic system of the head and neck with emphasis on location and function of drainage. (II)
9. Describe the routes of infection of the face and oral cavity. (III)
10. Describe the injection sites for dental anesthesia (IV)
