Instrumentation Techniques
Introduction and application to basic dental hygiene instrumentation techniques. Purpose, use, types and instrumentation techniques for various instruments used for oral prophylaxis and evaluation; treatment planning; patient motivation and counseling. First patient experiences. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program. Corequisites: DAE101AA or DHE101AA.

1. Operate and maintain dental equipment. (I)
2. Maintain aseptic technique. (I)

4. Perform health assessment, establishing baseline vital signs on a dental patient. (II)
5. Assess condition of intraoral/extraoral soft tissue. (II)
6. Assess and record normal, atypical, and abnormal gingival and periodontal conditions recording mild, moderate, and advanced stages of gingivitis as well as stages of periodontitis, recession, and furcation invasion. (II)
7. Assess tooth structure for existing and possible restorative treatment. (II)
8. Prepare a dental hygiene treatment plan. (II)
9. Explain the dental hygienist's role in total patient care, recognizing the need for treatment referral. (II)
10. Demonstrate proper instrumentation techniques of explorers, periodontal probes, scalers, curets, and files. (III)
11. Detect and remove all calculus deposits from teeth to the depth of the epithelial attachment with a minimum of trauma and discomfort to the patient. (III)
12. Selectively polish clinical crowns of teeth to remove extrinsic stains with minimum trauma to hard and soft tissues and using an appropriate agent. (III)
13. Demonstrate proper patient selection and operation of the sonic and ultrasonic scaler. (III)
14. Utilize motivational counseling techniques to educate the patient concerning his/her role in attaining and maintaining oral health. (IV)
15. Maintain complete and accurate patient records of treatment. (V)
16. Identify and describe the different types of soft and hard tissue desensitizing agents. (VI)
