Basic Operatory Procedures Laboratory
Introduction to basic clinical procedures in dental assisting. Dental equipment operation, infection control, and sterilization procedures; operator, assistant, and patient positioning; basic clinical procedures performed by the hygienist. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Assisting Program or permission of instructor.

1.	Identify parts of and operate and maintain the dental equipment. (I) (IV)
2.	Perform infection control procedures to prevent cross contamination and transmission of bloodborne pathogens and other contagious diseases in the dental office. (II)
3.	Comply with the current recommended universal precautions and guidelines of OSHA, CDC, and ADA for patient and operator safety. (II)
4.	Demonstrate four-handed dentistry principles; establish and maintain operator and assistant positions which maximize comfort and efficiency. (III) (IV)
5.	Seat, inform, and prepare patient for dental procedures to maximize physical and psychological comfort. (III) (IV)
6.	Obtain, record, and evaluate a complete medicodental history. (IV)
7.	Obtain and record vital signs of a patient, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate. (IV)
8.	Perform and record findings of an intraoral and extraoral cancer exam. (IV)
9.	Examine and assess tooth structure for existing and possible restorative treatment and record by charting in the patient record. (IV)
10.	Assess a patient's oral hygiene using a recognized oral hygiene index; educate the patient in oral hygiene care. (IV)
11.	Use various techniques to apply different topical fluorides. (IV)
12.	Apply pit and fissure sealants. (IV)
13.	Demonstrate the use of the medical emergency kit, first aid kit, and oxygen units. (IV)
14.	Demonstrate the emergency protocol for clinic patients, and administer symptomatic treatment for medical complications or emergencies. (IV)
15.	Assess and record tooth vitality. (IV)
16.	Clean removable prosthetics using the ultrasonic cleaner and manual techniques in an aseptic manner. (IV)
17.	Prepare syringe for intravenous and intramuscular injection. (IV)
18.	Demonstrate patient transfer from wheelchair to dental chair. (IV)
19.	Identify and describe characteristics, uses, and care of various dental hygiene instruments. (IV)
20.	Demonstrate polishing of clinical crowns of teeth. (IV)
21.	Perform and record a functional assessment of the dentition. (IV)
22.	Demonstrate the application of hard and soft tissue desensitizing agents. (IV)
