Educational and therapeutic techniques necessary for patient instruction; patient evaluation, nutritional counseling, fluorides, development of individual programs, and techniques of patient motivation. Prerequisites: Admission to the Dental Assisting Program or permission of instructor.

1. Identify and describe oral structures and differentiate between normal and atypical; describe saliva and relate its importance to the oral cavity. (I)
2. Describe and identify predisposing factors relating to dental disease and describe the etiology of the disease involved. (II)
3. Describe the procedures involved in prevention of dental disease with mechanical cleansing and method of brushing, flossing, interdental care, disclosing, and dentrifices; identify the rationale behind the selection of each. (III)
4. Identify methods of motivating individual patients to the practice of effective preventive dentistry. (IV)
5. Describe the effects flouride has on dentitions, identify various topical fluoride compounds and techniques of their application, and describe the social and environmental impact of water fluoridation. (V)
6. Describe the purpose of Public Health Denistry at the federal, state, and local levels. (VI)
7. Describe and identify the use of sealants. (VII)
8. Identify the recommended dietary allowances, oral manifestations of nutritional deficiences, and evaluation and modification of patient diet. (VIII)
9. Develop a dental hygiene education program to be presented to various groups. (IX)
