Analyze and interpret technical drawings. Local codes, Federal Housing Administration and Urban Development standards. Accepted building practices based on the Uniform Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety Laws. Prerequisites: None.

1. Interpret blueprint symbols. (I)
2. Examine and describe plan specifications. (II)
3. Interpret blueprints of specific residential and light commercial buildings. (III)
4. Interpret the current edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) as it applies to terminology, wiring practices, and their relationship to heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. (IV)
5. Interpret the current edition of the uniform mechanical code related to ventilation, evaporative coolers, air conditioning and refrigerants. (V)
6. Interpret the current edition of the uniform plumbing code as related to definitions, vents/venting, fuel gas piping, water heaters and water heater vents. (VI)
7. Interpret the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) laws for safe work places, to include ladders, staging, construction sites, and material safety data sheets. (VII)
8. Interpret the standards for sheet metal design and fabrication set by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (SMACNA), to include class construction , pressure-velocity, classification, fittings, flexible ducts, insulators, hangers and supports. (VIII)
9. Identify City of Phoenix codes that supersede or supplement the NEC, uniform mechanical code, uniform plumbing code, OSHA code or the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association codes. (IX)
10. From a set of building blueprints, list codes and reference sources for mechanical, electrical, air conditioning, heating and ventilating specifications. (X)
