Intermediate Japanese Conversation
Continued development of skills in conversational Japanese for effective communication and study of the Japanese culture. Includes the introduction to intermediate Japanese conversation, basic structural approach to Japanese grammar, Japanese writing system and civilization. Prerequisites: JPN116 or Departmental Approval.

1. Acquire pronunciation of core Japanese vocabulary. (I)
2. Correctly use a basic Japanese vocabulary composed of basic words related to business and culture. (I)
3. Conjugate verbs in their colloquial form. (II)
4. Differentiate between male and female speech forms. (II)
5. Use basic Japanese phrases, expressions, and levels of speech appropriate to address people with a lower social status. (II)
6. Use basic Japanese phrases, expressions, and levels of speech appropriate to address people with a higher social status. (II)
7. Use basic Japanese phrases, expressions, and levels of speech appropriate to address people with the same social status (II)
8. Adapt compound sentence patterns to suit the need of typical situations in Japanese daily life and business settings. (II)
9. Describe the history of the katakana, Hiragana, and Kanji writing system. (III)
10. Read list words of Katakana and Hiragana and approximately 10 Kanji. (III)
11. Describe the Japanese customs and culture. (IV)
12. Identify the various forms of non-verbal Japanese communication. (IV)
13. Compare the regional and standard Japanese dialects. (IV)
14. Compare the spoken Japanese from Primeval to Modern times. (IV)
15. Explain how the styles of literature have changed from Primeval to Modern times. (IV)
