Professional Writing Fundamentals

Examines the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, spelling, style and structure necessary in professional writing fields, including media writing.

Prerequisites: Placement in ENG101 on District approved English Placement Test, or a grade of C or better in ENG071.

Using correct terminology, identify sentence elements and describe the function of each in the sentence. (e.g. noun, subject, verb, clause, phrase, etc.). (I, II)

Apply correct punctuation standards to sentences as needed for professional writing. (III)

4.

Recognize and correct errors and weaknesses in sentences, paragraphs, and longer passages [or in written passages]. (II, III, V)

Recognize appropriate spelling and use correct versions of words in developing a story. (IV)

6.

Use compound and complex sentence structures effectively in writing. (II, V)

7.

Select the correct words based upon definition and context within writing. (IV, V)

Apply correct Associated Press Style to professional writing. (V)

Edit stories for power, clarity, brevity and accuracy. (V)

10.
