Major principles of sport psychology for fitness professionals who work with athletes and sports participants. Psychological considerations related to communication, mental training, and performance enhancement.
Prerequisites: None. EXS112 and PSY101 recommended.

1. Describe effective social interaction as it relates to sport, identify barriers to effective interaction, and develop strategies for improving social interaction processes within sport. (I)
2. Describe the role of motivation in sport. (I)
3. Describe the role of aggression in sport and its psychosocial implication. (I)
4. Describe psychological skills and techniques such as anxiety management, imagery, goal setting, concentration, self-talk, and pre- performance routines. (II)
5. Describe the Yerkes-Dodson Law of Optimal Arousal/Optimal Performance with respect to the attainment of optimal sport performance. (II)
6. Describe guidelines for referring individuals for professional counseling, and describe psychological factors typically associated with periods of athletic stagnation. (III)
7. Describe different psychological reactions to injury and describe ways to proceed with the psychosocial components of the rehabilitation process. (III)
