Inpatient ICD Coding Applications

International Classification of Diseases (ICD) procedure code assignment. Use of appropriate coding guidelines and federal, state, and local compliance standards for procedures. Application of diagnostic and procedural codes for inpatient settings.

Prerequisites: (BIO202, HCC204, and HIM185), or permission of Program Director.

Inpatient ICD Coding Applications

 

1.

Describe the organization and format of Volume III of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). (I)

2.

Define and use ICD procedure coding conventions including instructional terms and notations. (I)

3.

Locate appropriate procedure codes using the ICD alphabetical index and tabular list. (II)

4.

Assign and appropriately sequence ICD codes for procedures. (III)

5.

Apply relevant coding guidelines for inpatient settings. (IV)

6.

Compare and contrast outpatient and inpatient ICD coding guidelines. (IV)

7.

Describe the Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS) requirements and use. (V)

8.

Apply the UHDDS requirements in selecting a principal diagnosis, principal procedure, and sequencing secondary codes. (V)

9.

Use health record documentation to select and support diagnostic and procedure codes. (VI)

10.

Identify and use references important for accurate ICD procedure and diagnostic code assignment. (VII)
