Refresher Course for Certified Emergency Medical Technicians
Designed to meet National and Arizona Department of Health Services (A-DHS) recertification for EMTs. Enhances the knowledge base of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and reinforces basic skills competencies. Prerequisites: Current basic EMT certification or permission of department.

1.	Describe the scope of the duties of the basic emergency medical technician. (I)
2.	Describe the medical/legal aspects and quality improvement components in EMT-Basic patient care. (I)
3.	Identify and perform the processes of initial and ongoing assessment, the detailed physical exam, focused history, and vital signs. (II)
4.	Identify significant findings in Number 3 that indicate an emergency in any of the following categories: medical, environmental, traumatic, or surgical. (II)
5.	Identify and care for a patient in need of basic life support. (III)
6.	Use mechanical aids to breathing and circulation. (IV)
7.	Identify and treat a patient in shock, including use of the pneumatic antishock garment (PASG). (V)
8.	Identify and treat injuries to the head, chest, abdomen, and genitalia. (VI)
9.	Demonstrate procedures facilitating patient's prescribed medications. (VI, IX, X)
10.	Identify and treat soft tissue injuries. (VII)
11.	Stabilize and splint muscular skeletal injuries in the extremities. (VIII)
12.	Identify and treat injuries to the skull, brain, neck, and spine. (VI, VIII)
13.	Identify and treat a patient with metabolic emergency. (IX)
14.	Identify and treat a patient with toxicological emergency. (X)
15.	Identify signs and symptoms of patients with a communicable disease. (XI)
16.	Identify and treat gynecologic and obstetrical emergencies. (XII)
17.	Identify and treat pediatric emergencies to include sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). (XIII)
18.	Identify and treat patients with behavioral emergencies. (XIV)
19.	Identify and treat patients with environmental emergencies. (XV)
20.	Apply techniques used in lifting, moving, positioning, or extricating patients as to minimize discomfort and additional injury. (XVI)
21.	Identify and use equipment assigned to ambulance and rescue vehicles. (XVII)
22.	Triage and categorize patient care by priorities in a simulated disaster. (XVIII)
23.	Respond to a simulated hazardous incident and identify management procedures. (XIX)
24.	Identify and treat the pulseless patient including the use of the semi-automatic defibrillator. (XX)
25.	Assess the site of a peripheral intravenous infusion to determine patency of the line or infiltration. (XXI)
26.	Monitor the rate of delivery of an intravenous infusion solution. (XXI)
