Types, standards, and principles of operation of steam boilers. High and low pressure boiler systems. Gauges, valves and accessories in boiler fittings. Steam and water accessory components. Fuel burning equipment for gas/oil boiler systems. Draft measurement and control. Combustion process. Gauges and measuring devices. Boiler water treatment. Hot water heating systems. Cooling systems. Boiler operations and safety.

1. Identify specific types, standards and principles of operation of steam boilers. (I)
2. Demonstrate use of specific gauges, valves and other accessories in boiler fittings in high and low pressure boilers. (II)
3. Explain basic boiler room systems for high pressure boilers. (III)
4. Describe steam and water accessory components including feedwater heaters, pumps, lines, floats, traps, valves, regulators, and cutoffs. (IV)
5. Identify fuel burning equipment including fuel oil burners, gas burners, combination burners and stokes. (V)
6. Demonstrate draft measurement in high and low pressure boilers. (VI)
7. Describe the combustion process for specific fuels including automatic controls. (VII)
8. Demonstrate boiler instrumentation using gauges, temperature measuring devices, pneumercators, flow meters, recorders and smoke indicators. (VIII)
9. Explain boiler water treatment process including blowdown systems, scale, oxygen, chemicals priming and carryover, and contamination. (IX)
10. Describe boiler hot water heating systems including circulation and temperature control. (X)
11. Describe specific types of cooling systems and the principles of operation including compression, refrigerants, absorption, lithium bromide and water systems. (XI)
12. Describe safe steam boiler operations including operator duties, start up and shut down, inspection, routine maintenance, and emergency procedures. (XII)
