1. Describe the importance of specimen collection in the overall patient care system. (I)
2. Describe and apply quality assurance in phlebotomy and specimen processing. (II)
3. Describe and apply Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and laboratory safety in phlebotomy and specimen processing. (III)
4. Define basic terms/codes related to phlebotomy, laboratory testing, and specimen processing. (IV)
5. Describe and use basic equipment, various types of additives, and special precautions when collecting and processing specimens for clinical analysis of blood constituents. (II, III, IV, V, IX)
6. Describe the coagulation cascade and how it relates to the selection of tubes for blood specimen collection. (VI)
7. Identify and describe the anatomy and physiology of the hand and arm. (VII)
8. Perform proper procedures in basic venous blood collection. (VIII)
9. Describe and use various basic methods involved in specimen handling, referral procedures, storage, and transporting laboratory specimens. (IX)
