Advanced Electrical Topics: Process and Distributed Control Systems
Development and usage of the Distributed Control System (DCS). Application of the cathode ray tube (CRT) in a DCS. Specific printer usage and control interfaces to process information. Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC) and Digital- to-Analog Converters (DAC). Supervisory computer tasks and configurations. DCS integration with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) and computers. Communication capability and wiring practices. Cost estimation of implementation.

1. Explain the development of the distributed control system (DCS) including influences, advantages and categories. (I)
2. Demonstrate the use of DCS including configuration, console equipment, video display, keyboard and other specific devices. (II)
3. Demonstrate the specific application of cathode ray tubes (CRTs) in a DSC. (III)
4. Demonstrate correct use of specific printers and control interfaces that allow electronic accessibility to processed information. (IV)
5. Demonstrate use of DSC input/output hardware including analog-to-digital converters (ADC) and digital-to-analog converters (DAC). (V)
6. Demonstrate DSC supervisory computer tasks and configurations. (VI)
7. Demonstrate DSC integration with programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and computers. (VII)
8. Demonstrate proper communication capability with a control system consisting of several specific digital devices. (VIII)
9. Demonstrate proper wiring practices in process control systems and various methods of signal conditioning in a DCS. (IX)
10. Prepare an estimate for the implementation of a DCS including main components and miscellaneous costs. (X)
