Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Didactic and psychomotor skills training and validation in techniques of Advanced Cardiac Life Support according to the 1994 Standards and Guidelines of the American Heart Association. Includes endotracheal intubation, ECG arrhythmia recognition, synchronized, unsynchronized and automated defibrillation, cardiovascular pharmacology, and electronic pacemaker. For all health-care related professionals, clinical and prehospital. Prerequisites: Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider validation, or National Safety Council Green Cross Professional Rescuer, EMT235, EMT236, or permission of instructor.

1. Describe the concepts of the Chain-of-Survival according to American Heart Association Standards and Guidelines. (I)
2. List and describe the causes of sudden cardiac death. (I)
3. Perform the skills in basic life support to include one - and two-person CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for adult and child, conscious and unconscious obstructed airway maneuvers for adult, child, and infant; CPR for infant victims. (I - II)
4. Successfully insert oral and nasal airways. (I -III)
5. Correctly apply the face mask, nasal cannula, non- rebreathing mask, and bag-valve-mask devices, noting the percentage of oxygen delivered for each adjunct. (I - III)
6. Correctly perform endotracheal intubation. (I -IV)
7. Correctly perform nasal and tracheal suction techniques. (I - IV)
8. Correctly interpret the basic ECG arrhythmia recognition. (V)
9. Describe each of the steps in the universal algorithm for adult emergency cardiac care. (I - VI)
10. Describe each of the steps in the algorithm for early management of patients with chest pain, signs, and symptoms of myocardial infarction. (I -VII)
11. Identify the arrhythmia and predict the anticipated mechanical pharmacologic, and electrical interventions. (I-VII)
12. Describe indications, techniques, and complications for peripheral and central venous access. (VII)
13. Identify the indications, contraindications, actions, side effects, uses, and dosages of the following drugs: oxygen, morphine, nitroglycerin, atropine, isoproterenol, lidocaine, procainamide, bretyllum, calcium chloride, furosemide, adenosine, verapamil, magnesium sulfate, propranalol, dopamine, dobutamine, and nitroprusside. 14. Given a patient simulation for bradydysrhthmias, stable and unstable supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, asystole, and pulseless electrical activity, identify the steps in the algorithm associated with each, according to the 1994 American Heart Association Guidelines. (I - IX)
15. Correctly perform transcutaneous pacing, defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, and automated defibrillation. (I- VI, VIII - X)
16. Given a patient simulation for ventricular fibrillation, pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and asystole confirmed as ventricular fibrillation, manage each member of the team, evaluating CPR, airway management, electrical, and pharmacologic interventions. (I -X)
17. Describe special resuscitation situations to include stroke, traumatic cardiac arrest, shock, congestive heart failure, near-drowning, and hypothermia. (XI)
18. Describe the medical-legal aspects of advanced cardiac life support to include advanced directives, do-not- resuscitate orders, discontinuation of life support measures, and concepts of skills validations. (XII)
