Traffic Procedures
Overview of traffic procedures. Includes traffic law, citations and warnings, traffic control, accident investigation, and dealing with impaired drivers. Prerequisites: None.

1. Define a civil traffic offense. (I)
2. Identify the most serious traffic offenses including those punishable as a felony. (I)
3. Given a factual situation in written, verbal, or visual form portraying a possible violation of state codes relating to a traffic violation, determine if a violation was committed, name of the violation, and identify the elements which led to the conclusion. (I)
4. Describe the attitude and demeanor necessary in dealing with traffic violators. (II)
5. Describe the process and requirements of each phase in the disposition and recording of a civil and criminal traffic citation. (II)
6. List the notice requirements for citing a violator into court. (II)
7. Demonstrate the ability to issue a citation and identify the distribution of each copy. (II)
8. Identify techniques for stopping and approaching suspects in vehicles. (II)
9. Describe the methods for channeling traffic and for blocking or closing a roadway. (III)
10. State the circumstances under which an officer is authorized to remove illegally stopped vehicles. (III)
11. Demonstrate the hand, whistle, and voice commands used to direct both vehicular and pedestrian traffic under both day and night conditions. (III)
12. Identify when a traffic report form is required by law to be completed. (IV)
13. Define terms related to traffic accident investigations. (IV)
14. List the steps required to evaluate a two-vehicle injury collision scene, interview witnesses, and take statements. (IV)
15. Use mathematical calculations to determine needed information for accident reports. (IV)
16. Describe the proper procedures for responding to and reporting a hit-and-run collision which has just occurred. (IV)
17. Complete a traffic accident form for a simulated accident. (IV)
18. Demonstrate the ability to prepare the following: a) a scaled diagram of an intersection using the traffic template b) a collision diagram utilizing the "Coordinate of Triangulation" method of location c) a detailed field sketch along with pertinent field notes and accurate recorded measurements of a simulated two vehicle injury collision. (IV)
19. Demonstrate the ability to recognize, record, and collect physical evidence; complete inventory forms, exchange slips, citations, and diagrams; and secure and safeguard a simulated two-vehicle injury collision scene. (IV)
20. Identify the symptoms of a suspect under the influence of alcohol or drugs and demonstrate the ability to conduct field sobriety tests. (V)
21. Demonstrate the ability to recognize, follow, stop, and arrest a driver under the influence of alcohol, and complete the "Driving Under Intoxication" cover sheet, citations, and a detailed report of the incident. (V)
22. Identify non-alcohol or drug-related factors that may affect an individual's ability to operate a motor vehicle. (V)
23. Identify provisions in the state code. (VI)
