Techniques of Detention Supervision
Knowledge and skills required to assume role of detention supervisor; administrative and personnel procedures, policies governing retention, management and release of inmates, legal issues and report writing.
Prerequisites: Student sponsored by governmental enforcement agency or permission of Department or Division.

1. List the steps involved in prioritizing tasks and describe how time management principles can be applied to daily scheduling. (I)
2. Describe the personnel guidelines which govern the rights and responsibilities of the department and employees. (II)
3. State the agencies' policies and procedures pertaining to emloyee discipline and grievances. (II)
4. State the general policies adn procedures concerning pay, leaves and expenditures. (III)

7. Identify and describe the techniques useful in the prevention of acting-out behavior including: verbal, non-verbal, and personal safety techniques. (VI)
8. Identify and demonstrate the use of the rules of criminal procedure that relate to incarceration. (VII)
9. Demonstrate the proper use of cash registers and balance sheets and be able to recognize and correct errors. (VIII)
10. Complete the inmate classification process using the required forms and scoring guidelines. (IX)
11. List the steps involved in inmate grievance procedures, demonstrate the use of appropriate forms and identify the time requirements for resolving grievances. (X)
12. List the parts of a well documented report and describe what information is required in each section. (XI)
13. Define "force" and describe how institutional policies should be applied when force is used. (XII)
14. Identify the types of inmate releases and demonstrate the correct procedures required in a variety of situations. (XIII)
15. List and describe the types of lawsuits inmates can file against employees and/or institutions and discuss ways to avoid liability. (XIV)
16. Describe procedures which should be followed when a summons is received and demonstrate how to testify in a professional manner. (XIV)
