Rigging, Level and Transit for Carpenters
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rigging standards and practices. Slings and rigging hardware, inspection, and rigging procedures and operations. Leveling instruments, rods, and note keeping. Venier scle and conventional system of linear and angular measurement. Prerequisites: Registered Apprentice status with the Central Arizona Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee or permission of apprenticeship coordinator.

1. Describe safe rigging practices using safety standards from OSHA section 1920 and 1926. (I)
2. Inspect wire rope, slings, and rigging hardware using ANSI B30.9 and manufacturer guidelines. (II)
3. Select slings and rigging hardware, attach safely to hoist loads, and complete simulated rigging tasks. (III)
4. Properly tie selected knots, hitches, and splices for safe and secure rigging procedures used on the job. (IV)
5. Demonstrate the proper hand and voice signals used to direct rigging operations at the jobsite. (V)
6. Describe specific leveling instruments including types and parts, handling and set up, and care in storage, transport, and use. (VI)
7. Discuss leveling rods including types of rods and terms used in note keeping for leveling operations. (VII)
8. Complete a simulated fieldwork exercise with leveling rods. (VIII)
9. Identify three kinds of vernier scales used for linear and angular measurement. (IX)
10. Demonstrate the conventional system of measuring angels using degrees, minutes, and seconds by correctly reading the vernier scale on the builder's level and transit-level. (IX)
